The process of installing a new TPO roof is very specific to the type of flat or low sloped roof it will be attached to. This means that there are provisions to install it over top of metal roofing, BUR or built-up roofs and other types of flat roofing.

For example, let’s say we were going attach this roofing system to a flat, ModBit (Modified Bitumen) roof. After preparing the surface and making any needed repairs, we would mechanically fasten Polyisocyanurate rigid foam insulation board or (ISO Board) for short, to it. This serves as the base for the TPO and is responsible for providing insulation from sound, heat and cold.

Next, we would unroll wide layers of TPO roofing at the lowest point of the roof and mechanically fasten it to the roof, through the insulation board. Then, we heat weld the long seams to form a single, thick, tough and rubbery sheet that is not only waterproof, but puncture resistant as well.

Any roof protrusions such as pipes, vents, HVAC stands and curbing get special gaskets and flanges that are then heat welded to the TPO to eliminate leaks. Finally, termination bars are installed around the outer edges of the roof to mitigate any wind penetration underneath.

Once competed, you have a single rubbery white blanket of tough roofing to keep water out for decades to come. Even better, annual maintenance is as easy as washing it off with a hose and keeping fallen debris off of it.
